Osteria Francescana Tops 50 Best Restaurants in the World (Full List)

Osteria Francescana, in Modena, Italy, is back on top of the world. Chef Massimo Bottura’s artistic, modern Italian restaurant bagged the number one spot on the famed The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for the second time in three years.

“This is amazing, this is something we built all together,” Bottura exclaiemd at the awards ceremony in Bilbao, Spain. “I am going to use this spotlight to show that chefs in 2018 are much more than the sum of their recipes.”

Last year’s winner, 11 Madison Park of NYC dropped to the four spot on the list. El Celler de Can Roca, a Catalonian outpost in Girona run by brothers Joan, Josep, and Jordi Roca in Girona, Spain landed in second. Third place was claimed by Mirazur, Chef Mauro Colagreco’s Riviera inspired roost in Menton, France.

The list of 50 restaurants included spots in 22 different countries, but the majority were located in Europe. The U.S., Latin America, and Asia scored six nods apiece. Africa’s only representation was Cape Town’s Test Kitchen square in the 50 spot.

The awards were created in 2002 Restaurant magazine, William Reed Media property. However, the results now lay in the hands of the creatively named, “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy.”

Winners are selected through an anonymous poll of 1000 chefs, restaurant owners, food critics, and miscellaneous “gourmets” in the Academy. “The Academy is split into 26 separate regions around the world,” according to William Reed. “Each region has its own voting panel of 40 members including a chairperson to head it up.”

Each voter is given ten picks and must use at least four picks for restos out of their region. Fine print stipulates that the voters must verify that they’ve actually eaten in the restaurants they nominate with in the past 18 months.

The awards carry tremendous international prestige, but they are not without problematic aspects. Notably, women are seldom represented on the list. For example, in 2017, only three restaurants with female chefs made the list—and each of those female chefs held the top job jointly with a man.

In addition, the Academy presents an award for Best Female Chef. This year Clare Smyth, of three Michelin Star fame, took the award. Yet, her restaurant, Core by Clare Smyth, did not even make the Top 100 in 2018.

The full list follows. Each restaurant’s former spot in 2017 is represented in parentheses. Below the top 50 are the less publicized runners-up in the 50-100 positions.
