Champagne Harvest Begins: Vendange 2018 In Photos

By Neat Pour Staff |

In Champagne, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Vendange or harvest started this week. As tens of thousands of hands began the process of picking, industry experts noted the past year’s excellent weather and predicted a stellar, likely vintage, year for the world’s favorite bubbly wine.

Warm weather and lots of rain prompted producers to declare August 21, a date two weeks earlier than average, the opening of vendange. Yet, early date is becoming increasingly common. Harvest also occurred during August in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2017.

Vendange is a massive production extending far beyond merely picking grapes; the fruit must be watched daily for ripeness, barrels must be cleaned, and the grapes must be processed quickly.

To facilitate this massive production, about 120,000 seasonal laborers flood into the region for a few weeks. In lieu of hotel rooms, many chose to stay in campers, now a defacto mascot of vendange, for the duration.
