Department of Spilled Drinks—Have you ever wondered what would happen if you dropped your phone in a glass of beer? Apple thinks you have. After Apple SVP Phil Schiller boasted that the iPhones XS and XS Max boasted that the new models can survive a swim your favorite lager, the claim was put to the test.
SquareTrade, a subsidiary of AllState, subjected the new iPhones to a battery of tests (involving lots of battery). The phones were dropped, tumbled, and yes, dunked in beer.
The beer test entailed submerging the phones in a five foot cylinder filled with 138 cans (that’s 1656 oz.) of Pabst Blue Ribbon for 30 minutes. After being removed the phones were wiped off and then turned on. They functioned perfectly. (However, the glass elements did shatter when dropped from a six foot height.)
If you doubt SquareTrade’s bonafides, don’t worry. Several other outlets also tested the beer resistance of the new XS line.
USA Today conducted their own experiment. The paper subjected the electronics to baths in hot coffee, Samuel Adams Summer Ale, Cupcake Vineyards Prosecco, and Coca-Cola. Once again, the Apple products passed with flying colors.
iFixIt’s Kay Kay also conducted a check. In that over-the-top video, she submerged an XS in over two meters of brew. In a twist, she leaves the phone on, with the stopwatch app running during the affair. The video ends around the five hour mark and the device is still functioning perfectly.
So, yes, the iPhones XS and XS Max are, indeed, beer-proof!
Well, sort of. Apple technically classifies the phones as “water resistant.” In fact, keep in mind that the warrantee actually does not cover water damage, before you go dropping your Xs in the closest cocktail.
The devices comply with a classification called IP68. According to Apple’s official specs, the Xs is safe in a “maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes.”
