Last year, we got our first whiff of the bar-room axe throwing fad. Yeah, axe throwing. The lumbersexual look is thankfully on the way out, but barroom hatchet tossing trend only seems to be growing. Four new axe-throwing joints are opening in Massachusetts alone.
On the cutting edge of the movement is Urban Axes, a national mini-chain. A March start is slated for their Baltimore outpost, their third. According to BizBash, the outfit is also planning a summer open for a location in Boston suburb, Somerville, Mass. If that was not enough for the good people of the Baked Bean State, Eater reports that three more axe-throwing joints are coming to Mass: Agawam Axe House, is opening in Agwam this month, Half Axe is opening February in Marlborough, and Revolution Axe Throwing is scheduled for an April 2018 opening in Everett.
Mass is chopping it up, but the rest of the nation is not far behind. We counted a dozen hatchet houses scheduled to open in 2018. Canadians Bad Axe Throwing expanded into the States last year and now boasts 19 locations in North America. Kick Axe who started the trend in Brooklyn (of course) are about to open Washington DC’s second axe bar.
If you prefer to a Blue Moon to blue ox while playing Paul Bunyan, you’re in luck. Most locations include in-house bars, others allow for BYOB or are situated directly adjacent to a bar. If the idea of mixing beers and axes seems questionable,
we agree proponents commonly point to darts as a similar bar room game with a safe(ish) history.
And, indeed, the rules of axe throwing are similar to darts. Competitors toss 1.5 pound axes down lanes at a wooden target comprised of concentric circles with different point values (basically a bullseye.)
The packages includes onsite coach/instructor types for the uninitiated. However, just to be on the safe side, throwers are asked to sign waivers. Corporate parties and other private events appear to be a big factor in the business models, but you can also walk in at most spots. An evening of hatchet throwing will set you back about $30-$35.
