Anyone who’s worked in the front of house has messed up an order. At the Manchester location of England’s upscale Hawksmoor steak houses, one server took ye ol’ ‘wrong order’ to the next level. She accidentally served a £4500 ($5758) an unordered bottle of 2001 Château Le Pin.
According to the restaurant, the customer actually ordered a 2001 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande—not too shabby itself—which Hawksmoor sells for £260 ($335).
Hawksmoor laughed off the error. (Their nine locations are cash cows!) The restaurant took to social media to joke about the switch. They also offered support to their employee, writing, “To the member of staff who accidentally gave it away, chin up! One-off mistakes happen and we love you anyway.”

A spokesperson for the restaurant explained, “It was a very busy night at the restaurant and a very simple mistake. A member of staff picked up the wrong bottle, mistaking it for another Bordeaux of the same vintage.”
Apparently, the guests enjoyed the Bordeaux so much that they tried to order a second bottle—unaware of the price tag. “The customer didn’t know and it was only afterwards that one of the managers picked up what had happened,” noted the spokesperson.
Hawksmoor founder Will Beckett told BBC, “At that kind of level you’re into a rarity, a flavour profile you won’t find anywhere else.”.
Still, Beckett was quick to stress his support for the employee. “[She’s] brilliant, and we know she is brilliant,” he declared. “[But,] I am going to tease her for this when she stops being so mortified.”
