NYC’s BlackTail To Close

Since opening in 2016, BlackTail, the expats-in-Cuba inspired bar from Dead Rabbit’s Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry, consistently racked up awards and critical praise. However, on January 11, the NYC drinkery will pour their last drink and close their doors permanently.

A statement from the company attributed the closing to the financials involved with the lower Manhattan location.

“Operating a bar, especially in a challenging location, proved to be a stretch economically, despite our best intentions and our deep love of the bar,” read the statement. “We are still 100% behind BlackTail’s concept of channeling an American bar in Cuba and look forward to reopening the bar in a new location, whether in New York City or elsewhere.”

Blacktail received numerous accolades during it’s three and a half year life including a Spirited Award for Best New American Cocktail Bar and inclusion on the World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Muldoon and McGarry’s other critical darling, the Dead Rabbit, will continue to operate. The duo also noted that their plans to expand the Dead Rabbit brand will proceed unabated.

In Fall 2020, a Dead Rabbit is slated to open in New Orleans . The second location will mimic the NYC original. Located in a nearly 200-year-old building in the French Quarter’s Conti Street, the new, three floor space will look much like the old. The ground floor will serve as a standing bar taproom. The upper two floors will offer seating and some outdoor space.

The publicans also noted that they are also considering expansion into markets including Boston, Nashville and Washington, DC.

Muldoon and McGarry also stressed a commitment to their ideals. “Rest assured that our relentless commitment to excellence and exceptional hospitality will continue to be the bedrock of all of our bars, now and forever.”

Netflix’s ‘Oktoberfest: Beer & Blood’ Delivers Wiesn Watch

The six part miniseries is evocative of Boardwalk Empire… in turn of the 20th century Germany… with Samoan cannibals thrown in for good measure. The beautifully shot result is at times riveting and others absurdly mediocre (see Samoan cannibals). However, the writers included enough elements of Oktoberfest culture to keep a hophead entertained, even during the lowpoints.
